The Bones of the Past Don’t Mean the Consequences Have Passed
Someones somewheres decided that April would be National Poetry Month and the month for the celebration of Mother Earth. Great!
I believe and feel this is a fitting month for both. I have written posts on Medium in the past under the banner of both of those topics.
Now, though, I would like to add another element, another topic I feel strongly associates the two. Our attitude towards Mother Earth, the historical disrespect humans have shown — especially the conquering colonizers — and the imbalance we have created, is not limited to Mother Earth. Our relationship to Her reflects our relationship to one another, in collective ways. And the past is not the past to Spirit, in collective ways.
The following poem arises from what I sensed when recently visiting Trail of Tears State Park in Missouri. I have encountered many people who like to disconnect themselves from the past because they weren’t slave owners or greedy gold seekers who displaced Indigenous People. While we may have not done those direct actions, the energies of the past know no time line. Just as the disrespect of Mother Earth has created environmental crises, the disrespect of fellow spirit human beings has created social crises that can’t be over just because we say they are.
